What is the Cryotherapy Ice Spa?
Cryotherapy(ice therapy) is the latest phenomenon used by athletes for last the two decades. Recent studies have suggested that cold water immersion can significantly increase the prevention and rehabilitation of sports injuries. It involves the patient being partially immersed(to waist level) in cold water for 5-10 minutes and for some upper torso injuries immersing(to shoulder level) for 1-2 min. The water temperature can range from 1-14 degrees and contains salts and water jets to penetrate the affected area.
Benefits of the Cryotherapy Ice Spa
1/ Decreases the blood flow initially while immersed but increases after treatment thus pumping more oxygen around the body and into the tissues. This increase in blood along with oxygen speeds up the healing process when injured.
2/ Overuse or heavy training sessions can lead to a build up of lactic acid. This causes the muscles to function poorly and over a long period of time feelings of fatigue, heavy legs and cramps can set in .The Cryotherapy sports bath helps to remove the waste products of exercise such as lactic acid and therefore an prevents the delayed onset muscle syndrome(Doms effect).
3/ Cold water immersion applied to the area decreases the flow of fluid, which escapes when blood vessels are torn(through injury or overuse) and slows the release of chemicals that can case pain and inflammation.
4/ Cold-water immersion also raises the production of enzymes and hormones including testosterone, which helps you recover quicker.
5/ Used on a regular basis the cold-water immersion helps to heal tiny tears in muscle fibres caused by hard training session.
When to use Cryotherapy Ice Spa
1/ As a preventative measure so to avoid injury.
2/ After heavy training or excessive exercise.
3/ When the feeling of tightness, tired or cramping develops in muscles.
4/ To use during competitive session to help recuperate quicker.
5/ Following an injury (to be assessed by therapist)
Why use the Cryotherapy Ice Spa?
Each patient is assessed thoroughly by a trained member of staff to establish the nature of the visit.
The patient will then be spoken through the procedure and will be constantly monitored(time, temperature of water and required sessions) throughout the duration. The patient then has the option of using the excellent facilities (assessments, changing rooms, and showers) provided free of charge after the cryotherapy sports bath.
In a standard ice bath the cold temperature cannot be maintained as the persons body temperature will raise the water temperature. Ice can burn the skin surface and if the time is not monitored properly can lead to nerve damage which can lead to slower reaction during exercise.
